Jacksonville's rich heritage dates back to the early 1800s, with many notable figures and events woven into its historic fabric, from Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas to Ken Norton. Its citizens played a role in shaping attitudes and policies through involvement in Abolition, Education, Labor, and other important movements. Through the years, Jacksonville influenced industry with local cigar making, bookbinding, and carnival ride production.
Over time, the town's traditional heart suffered. In 1999, Jacksonville Main Street devoted itself to preserving and enhancing the original business district, a 44-square-block area bordered by Clay, Beecher, Church, and Lafayette Streets. Since then, widespread community support of JMS projects has earned State and National attention, and moreover, made tangible improvements.
