Downtown National Historic District

On June 27, 2018, the nomination for the Downtown Jacksonville National Register Historic District was presented to the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council. The committee unanimously voted to recommend its acceptance to the National Park Service, saying "this nomination was one of the best ones" they had seen.

The National Register Status holds many benefits for property owners aside from the tourist-attracting honor. Federal 20% Historic Tax Credits for appropriate work on commercial structures are now available for qualified projects. Illinois just passed similar legislation to provide for a 25% tax credit beginning in 2019. Other grants and incentives may also be available for certain improvements along with this designation.

This project was made possible through a Certified Local Government Grant, administered by Illinois Department of Natural Resources Historic Preservation Division and Jacksonville Main Street on behalf of the Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission.

While the Local Landmark District has not been approved, the Commission will be reassessing current ordinances and developing comprehensive, user-friendly design guidelines to assist property owners with any project they may be contemplating. The goal is to make the process go as smoothly as possible and to protect property values and owners while safeguarding Jacksonville's rich history. The new Downtown Historic District map is viewable here.

Enjoy free Wi-Fi on the Square! In 2017, Jacksonville Main Street made access to free Wi-Fi available to the public in and around Central Park. Simply look for JMS Guest under available networks, click to access, and utilize this service for up to 2 hours in a 24-hour period.

Digital Downtown/Available Space

Jacksonville Main Street's Economic Restructuring Committee is pleased to unveil its latest projects: Digital Downtown and Available Space!

Both were spearheaded by committee-member and Morgan County GIS Coordinator Shawn Artis, as a two-fold project. Available Space lists basic information about properties for sale or rent downtown.

Discover Downtown has a multi-level business listing that uses GIS to help highlight JMS District businesses near the person searching for any type of business category within the downtown area.

Since Jacksonville Main Street is a non-profit organization, Digital Downtown is just one more free feature that benefits not only downtown business and property owners, but also visitors and residents, and is not offered anywhere else in Morgan County. This cutting edge tool is available on both computers and cell phones, putting all important downtown information at everyone's fingertips!

Thanks to Morgan County GIS for this fabulous partnership that helps make downtown greater! The ER Committee has even more ideas for Digital Downtown, so watch for changes and updates!
